These moms are making it happen in the world of business.
It’s common knowledge that being a mom is a 24-hour job. Many women take on multi-faceted roles and tasks once they become a mom: nursing, putting the baby to sleep, telling stories, nurturing, among many other things. Of course, partners or husbands can also be credited for the help that they do when raising a child, but sometimes, it can be tougher for moms. Even the fact that they carried and delivered a human being into this world is already one of the hardest jobs any one could have ever done!
Taking on a career or starting a business is believed to be a different story especially for moms, but many women have proven that it’s completely possible. “Running a house and running a business are very much the same,” says Debra Cohen, a New York entrepreneur. “It requires your attention all the time. You have to nurture it; it requires you to bring creativity and give it the proper attention.”
Ianthe Mauro, a mom and founder of a flourishing non-toxic candle business called “Objects with a Purpose,” wanted to set a great example for her kids. She says, “I wanted my son to see what women can do; I wanted my daughter to see what she can do.”

Ever wonder who’s behind the iconic red carpet and music video looks of R&B and Hip-Hop artists like Beyonce, Jay-Z, Missy Elliot, and P. Diddy? June Ambrose, a mother of two, is the fashion designer and stylist responsible for making the stars look their best. And she always looks amazing herself! Her two stylish kids that sometimes join her in the front row during fashion week. She even starred in her own reality show “Styled by June,” a few years back. She told Refinery29, “I got in 20 years ago when the music industry wasn’t the competitive game it is now. It was a time when urban music wasn’t yet being played on MTV [or] VH1. I landed an internship at a record company and hooked up with director Hype Williams — at the time [he] was truly the video-director maverick that started long-form music videos. We approached it kind of like the theatre, [adding] a costume-designer aesthetic to the music genre. Really, my career took off in the world of music videos.” She says the best advice she was ever given was from her mom: “Always show up ready to win … you put your best foot forward. Treat life like it’s a stage, like the sidewalks are the runway.”

Being a mom can be inspiring and it opens several possibilities for business derived from a particular need of your child. Michele Welsh created her business out of the need to keep her child safe and secure whenever they go to crowded places. She and her family went to an amusement park and out of fear that her children might wander off or lose their way, she wrote her number and address on their arms. Michele had to rewrite the number several times as it smeared or washed off. Several parents in the park stopped her to ask if that was her number on the kids’ arms. Each time, they loved the idea. That’s when she came up with the idea for SafetyTat. It provides temporary tattoos, labels and stickers that include your phone number and other relevant details. Michele says, “SafetyTat is not only a fun way to secure your little ones, but also peace of mind for moms and dads as well.”
“If it was easy, everyone would do it. You have to be a little bit crazy; you have to have gumption and tenacity. A lot of people give up at the first roadblock. But, for entrepreneurs, if there isn’t another road, we create it. We break concrete; we throw dynamite; we figure it out.”
Jessica Alba is a name associated to teenage blockbuster movies and one of Hollywood’s most beautiful faces. After getting married and having a baby, Jessica had other great things in mind. She’s one of the many moms who created something amazing out of a necessity. She herself grew up with asthma and allergies. When was pregnant with her first daughter, Honor, she had a baby shower and received new baby clothes as gifts. When she washed her unborn baby’s onesies with a detergent her mother had recommended and broke out in hives, she was in panic. She told Vanity Fair magazine, “I was thinking, what if my baby has a reaction and I don’t know? What if her throat is closing? I had all this fear and anxiety because I was always so sick as a child.” That night she Googled every ingredient and discovered that some toxins can be labeled as “fragrance.” Thus, the Honest company was born. She said, “I wanted safe and effective consumer products that were beautifully designed, accessibly priced, and easy to get.” Now it’s a multi-million-dollar business that sells non-toxic, eco-friendly baby care products, cleaning products, as well as vitamins and skin care.
